Are Your Beliefs Holding You Back?

I often have client's tell me their reasons as to why losing weight is impossible for them. The reason's they describe are often difficult challenges to overcome for sure; however if they don't believe losing weight is possible, then it won't be.

Nelson Mandela said "Everything is impossible until it is done." I am a big believer that in order to achieve something, you need to believe you can do it. You may not believe it at the start of your journey, however with small wins and some momentum, I've observed client's self-belief grow. They then go on and achieve amazing results. 

Here are a few examples of what I hear and see:

1) "I can't lose weight, I'm from a family of big people."

Genetics can surely be a challenge to overcome, however we know that genetics are described as the gun, yet our environment pulls the trigger. Not only do families share genetics, they also share meals and the food environment. These can be changed. 

2) "I can't lose weight, I'm no good at sport and can not exercise."

It's true, exercise is a real bonus when it comes to weight loss; but you don't have to be the best at it, rather you just need to get your heart rate up. This can be dancing by yourself at home, or simply walking. Exercise is also just one element when it comes to weight loss. If you are overweight due to genetics, metabolism or even medications, what can you do about it?

3) "I'm on X medication therefore I can't lose weight."

Again, this is a major hurdle. Some medications do make weight loss difficult, but none make it impossible. Giving up altogether will only exacerbate your symptoms. 

4) "I have an underactive thyroid, therefore I can't lose weight."

Yes this too is a challenge for weight loss, however can be medicated and managed. Your results may be slower than for someone who does not have an underactive thyroid, however we have had clients achieve amazing results through perseverance and knowing how to manage the condition. 

PLEASE don't think I am dismissing these challenges as something you can just brush past on your way to losing weight. They are real challenges that can be both a physical and mental hurdle on the path to achieving the results you desire.

The point of this post though is to challenge your thinking about what is possible.

The human brain is amazing.

We create our own self-fulfilling prophecies. Ask yourself the following: 

What are the elements you can control?

Was there a time in your life that your weight changed more than at any other time? If so, what was the reason?

Have you maintained a healthy weight at some stage in the past? If so, how? Do you have the ability to adjust your current lifestyle to be similar to that point in time?
